Coach 1: Story
Growing up in a religious household with strong community ties, his experience of being gay was difficult for both him and his family, as they faced significant stigma from those around them. He recalls that some community members still pass judgment. As a child, he didn’t fully understand his feelings but now reflects that "this thing had been there all along without me realizing." He was always drawn to other boys, and his attraction to men was present even back then.
After losing his job in early 2022, he spent a few months unemployed before getting involved with local organizations. Through these connections, he was offered the chance to become a coach. He applied, got the role, and now finds great satisfaction in his work. He described the training as "informative," equipping him with the tools to build confidence in himself and others. One key lesson was how to handle sensitive situations, such as delivering test results, and how to read and respond to a person’s reaction. "If I hadn’t been to the training, I wouldn’t have known."
Another important skill he developed was handling confidential information, ensuring trust between him and his clients. He focuses on making people feel comfortable, assuring them that their information will remain private. He believes having a dedicated clinician for coaches would be beneficial, reducing dependence on busy healthcare facilities.
Reflecting on his journey as a coach, he admits it wasn’t easy at first, but he soon adapted. Now, he confidently recruits and approaches people. Laughing, he recalls how stubborn he used to be, going to get medication but not taking it. However, his exposure to health organizations and their focus on treatment helped him accept himself and change his behavior even before the coach training began.
