I have a second home
Anele is a married man in his forties who lives with his wife of many years and his children. At the same time, he openly acknowledges that he is also sleeping with other men. He keeps a room in a separate property where he takes male partners he has ‘picked up’ at a shebeen or clubs in the area late at night.
Describing his sexual behaviour, Anele reflects that he is just a man who likes to ‘do men and women’ because ‘some of the things, you know, they just happen… Just like a woman, I get attracted to everyone.’
Anele is HIV negative and is on daily PrEP support from coach. He trusts his coach a lot and his coach has also helped him to unpack being more comfortable with his same-sex behaviour because just like him, his coach used to identify as a straight man who slept with men secretly. He makes a point of clarifying that he is always a top (penetrative partner) and his male partners are bottoms (receptive partners) in their sexual relations. He explains that he tries to use condoms with his male partners but admits that this is not always possible.
